Acrylic nails were developed decades before gel nails. They are much more damaging because they often rip off your natural nails or leave them so thin that they can't grow properly themselves. This means that people who choose to have acrylic nails need to keep going back to a manicurist at least once every couple of months.
Gel nails should only be removed by a manicurist, but your nails underneath should be healthy enough that you won't have to replace them with another set of artificial nails.
